3 Dead, 4 Injured After Box Truck Rollover on I-75 in Collier County

Three people are dead and four others were injured after a box truck rolled over on southbound I-75 near the Pine Ridge Road exit in Collier County on the morning of June 1, 2026. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash, which shut down southbound lanes for hours.

Among the dead is Jonathan Garcia Arias, 25, of Naples — a Good Samaritan who had stopped to help the truck driver after the rollover. He was struck and killed when a Tesla traveling southbound collided with the underside of the overturned box truck and hit him. Two passengers in the Tesla — an 18-year-old and a 19-year-old, both from Naples — were also pronounced dead at the scene. The Tesla driver and two other passengers sustained serious injuries and were transported to a hospital.

The box truck driver, a 31-year-old Naples man, sustained only minor injuries.

At Juan Cordero Lawyers, we extend our deepest condolences to the families of Jonathan Garcia Arias and the two young victims who lost their lives. Their families deserve answers — and they may have important legal rights under Florida law.

What Happened on I-75 Near Pine Ridge Road

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the box truck was traveling southbound on I-75 near mile marker 108 when it drifted off the road, veered back onto the interstate, and overturned. The driver exited the truck after the rollover.

Jonathan Garcia Arias, who had been driving a BMW, stopped his vehicle and got out to assist the truck driver. A Tesla carrying five people then approached the scene and collided with the underside of the overturned box truck — and with Mr. Garcia Arias.

The Florida Department of Transportation opened the new diverging diamond interchange at Pine Ridge Road one day early to accommodate traffic detours while the scene was cleared.

Who May Be Legally Responsible

When a commercial truck drifts off the road and rolls over on a Florida interstate, the legal question is: why did the truck leave its lane?

Florida and federal law impose strict requirements on commercial truck drivers and their employers. Potential causes of a truck drifting and rolling over include:

  • Driver fatigue — federal Hours of Service regulations (49 C.F.R. Part 395) limit how long a commercial driver can operate without rest. Violations are common and can be proven through electronic logging device (ELD) data
  • Distracted driving — cell phone use, GPS interaction, or other distractions
  • Impairment — alcohol or controlled substances; post-crash drug and alcohol testing is federally required
  • Mechanical failure — tire blowout, brake failure, or steering defects that the driver or fleet owner failed to maintain
  • Improper cargo loading — an unbalanced or overloaded truck is far more likely to roll over, especially on highway curves or when correcting a drift
  • Speeding or reckless driving — excessive speed for conditions

Depending on the cause, potentially liable parties may include:

  1. The box truck driver — for negligent operation
  2. The truck's owner or employer — under the doctrine of respondeat superior (employers are liable for employees' negligent acts in the scope of employment)
  3. A leasing company — if the truck was leased
  4. A cargo loading company — if improper loading contributed to the rollover
  5. A maintenance contractor — if a mechanical defect caused the drift

Jonathan Garcia Arias: A Good Samaritan's Family Has Legal Rights

Jonathan Garcia Arias stopped to help a stranger in distress. He was killed doing so. His family has the right to pursue a wrongful death claim against the parties whose negligence caused the crash that put him in harm's way.

Florida's Wrongful Death Act (§768.16–768.26) allows surviving family members to recover:

  • Loss of companionship and protection for parents and siblings
  • Mental pain and suffering for surviving family members
  • Loss of future net accumulations — the income and savings a 25-year-old would have earned over a full lifetime
  • Medical and funeral expenses
  • Loss of support and services provided to the family

Florida's Good Samaritan Act (§768.13) protects people who render emergency aid from liability — but it does not limit the rights of a Good Samaritan's family to sue the party whose negligence created the emergency in the first place.

The Two Young Victims in the Tesla

The 18-year-old and 19-year-old passengers who died in the Tesla were not driving — they were passengers with no control over the vehicle. Under Florida law, passengers have the strongest possible claims in a crash. Their families may have wrongful death claims against:

  • The box truck driver and his employer (for creating the hazard on the roadway)
  • Potentially the Tesla driver, depending on the investigation's findings regarding speed and reaction time

For young victims with their entire lives ahead of them, the damages in a wrongful death case can be substantial — including decades of lost future earnings and the full weight of a family's grief.

Why You Must Act Quickly

Evidence in commercial truck crashes disappears fast:

  • Electronic Logging Device (ELD) data — federal law requires retention for only 6 months; after that it may be overwritten or deleted
  • Black box / ECM data — the truck's engine control module records speed, braking, throttle, and steering inputs in the seconds before the crash
  • Dashcam footage — from the truck, nearby vehicles, or highway cameras
  • Cell phone records — showing whether the driver was on the phone
  • Drug and alcohol test results — post-crash testing is federally required; results must be preserved
  • Maintenance and inspection records — showing whether the truck had known mechanical issues

An experienced Florida truck accident attorney can send a legal hold letter to the trucking company immediately, demanding preservation of all data. Once a trucking company's lawyers get involved, evidence can be lost or destroyed if no hold is in place.

Florida's wrongful death statute of limitations is 2 years from the date of death (§95.11(4)(d)). For a crash that occurred on June 1, 2026, that deadline is June 1, 2028 — but waiting is never advisable.
